Issues / Issue 3
I was recently in Washington DC exploring cafe culture for one of our lovely clients and one of our subjects kept referring to himself as a ‘sentient sack of meat’ that apparently needed a lot of coffee. But if that’s all we are, we sure do spend a lot of time and energy keeping the ‘sack of meat’ alive, feeling good, looking attractive, judging others and modifying its bits and pieces.
So much of our political division and social friction all comes back to how we legislate, monetize, medicalize and humanize our fleshy existence.
In this issue we decided to explore the front line of all things body related, from those who view their body as temple to those who consider it an amusement park (thank you Anthony Bourdain). We met a DJ who nearly died of Covid and now writes and performs anonymously in order to tell the truth without callous judgment or underserved consequence.
We explored a group of elderly people who plan to someday commit suicide. We interviewed the people behind a neuro-divergent TikTok. We went to The Body Farm to witness decomposition. We attended Aqua Fitness with Brooklyn’s elderly water dancers (and have become hooked!). We met a Dad who got a vasectomy on Fathers Day, performed by Dr Snip. We found ourselves poking fun at the transhumanist dream of a body-free future. And somehow we found a clown called Skittles who turned to medical tattooing during Covid.
Welcome to the body issue – more sentient, less sack of meat.
Try this on for size.
